Frequently Asked Questions
I think one of the best ways to describe therapy is that it’s designated "you time." In today's busy world, how often do we actually sit and reflect on what’s going on in our lives? At Tailored Therapy & Counseling, therapy is a collaborative process where we’ll reflect and work through your thoughts, feelings, and goals together.
Often people are looking for a quick fix or someone to tell them what to do, but a good therapist actually remains neutral. My goal is not to tell you how you should live your life, but to provide space, support, and ask thoughtful questions to help guide you toward your own solution.
Most people already have friends or family willing to offer opinions or advice. My goal is to provide you with a different experience. Sometimes people just need permission that their thoughts and feelings are okay.
That doesn’t mean you’ll just be talking on a couch while I nod and ask how you feel. While I won’t tell you whether or not you should quit your job or end your relationship, I will help you explore conflicting thoughts and feelings and provide tools and strategies for working through distressing emotions.
There are many types of therapy, but research shows what is most important is your relationship with your therapist. If you don’t feel comfortable with your therapist, you won’t feel comfortable sharing your deeper thoughts and feelings, which can prevent you from feeling fully understood or benefiting as much from the experience.
At Tailored Therapy & Counseling, I strive to know and understand you on a deeper level. No thoughts or feelings are too small or insignificant. I also welcome feedback about the service I’m providing. I genuinely want to help you. So, if you ever feel like I’m not getting you, let me know so we can pivot and go in the direction you want to go. And if that direction is trying another therapist, that’s fine too.
Yes! According to research, teletherapy can be just as effective as in-person counseling. And in some cases, it may work even better. Aside from greater flexibility and convenience, some people find they’re able to tap into their thoughts and feelings more easily from the comfort of their home or office.
When I’m working with someone new, the first session is all about getting to know you. I want to hear your story, what’s bringing you in, your thoughts, your feelings, and your hopes. We’ll also explore what you would like to get out of therapy, address any questions you have, and because stress usually doesn’t exist in isolation, I also like to explore other parts of your life, like work, school, family, friendships, and romantic relationships.
Because each person is unique, there’s no one size fits all model for therapy. That’s why Tailored Therapy & Counseling tries its best to deeply understand each client and tailor services to each person’s needs. That said, most of my clients tend to come weekly. Weekly sessions allow for more continuity and follow-through between sessions. And like most things in life, you tend to get out what you put in. But the duration of our work together may vary. I’ve had some clients for a few months and others for years. Often people find that there’s always more to explore and the focus of sessions may shift as you work through what initially brought you in.
